Being stagnant at work or in one's career means you don’t see anything positive happening with you at work. And that is a very depressive feeling and soon this feeling moves into your personal life and everybody realizes that there is something wrong with you. Even stagnant water, after sometime starts to smell and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Similarly, you also start developing negative thoughts and emotions towards just about everything. This can happen to individuals as well as businesses because business is essentially a group of people working together.
Below are some reasons that causes this to happen.
1. Money
Yes, money can be a reason for you to feel stuck. Many a times we accept a job just because the Salary and Perks are lucrative. We don’t get into looking at the job description in detail. Only after you start working and the euphoria of extra income dies out, we start to realize that we are in a wrong job and we really don’t like doing what we are doing. And it is quite natural that when we are forced to do something against our wish, a vicious circle sets in which brings in all the negatives that it can bring.
2. Your Own Creative Calling
Some of us are really creative and hate to do mundane jobs. When you become good and outgrow your job profile, boredom sets in. Once that happens, it starts reflecting in your work. You start making mistakes in the very work that you once were expert in and you start doubting yourself and your skills.
3. Your Skills become Outdated
You did not update your skills and you are not in sync with the changing times around you. When that happens the organization that you work for does not give you the importance and respect that you once got. The business that you are in, does not get as many customers that you once got. You are stuck in a position with no or very less customers but mounting bills, Organization where there is no respect or any pay rise for you. Chances are that you either get fired or good organizations wait for you to quit. And since you know this, you keep hanging out there holding the thinnest thread, avoiding or delaying the eventual expected outcome. And this can be very painful phase for anyone.
There are several more situations that cause individuals or businesses to start stagnating.
Now let's look at 3 possible ways to avoid this situation:
1. Upgrade Yourself Regularly
The world we live in today is changing very fast and with that changes consumer tastes and preferences. Many skills and products that were in demand few years back are no more required. Remember Videocon, Yahoo.. Hence it is extremely important that you stay updated with what is changing in the outside world and upgrade your skills and products on regular basis. This will keep you in vogue all the time.
2. Understand your Job Description
One should not jump into a job just because it pays more. Eventually, this decision will haunt you. If for some reason you are compelled to take the job for money, make sure you are aware of this fact that this is just an interim engagement and start working towards looking at the job on hand with a different perspective of liking it or keep looking for a job that you like and pays you the same as your current job.
3. Have a open Communication with your Supervisor
It pays to have a open discussion with your Supervisor, from time to time, regarding your work. You should seek honest feedback about your work and also let your Supervisor know if there is something that bothers you about the job. That will help your Supervisor always keep you in mind whenever he gets a chance to offer you something more challenging and rewarding which will keep you interested in your work. This is good or the Organization too.
